Updating Your Tool

Cool Trading Tools is always expanding and maintaining the tools it sells. Therefore, we will occasionally release updated tools with added features and/or bug fixes. The new releases will be posted in the Forum section of this website under “Downloads and Revisions”, segregated by the tool affected.

The new release can be installed just like any other indicator, script, or expert. Its name will be different than the previous name (i.e. XYZ 1.03 would be superseded by XYZ 1.04) so that all versions can be left in your platform’s folder. However, we recommend that older versions be eventually removed to avoid future confusion and general clutter. Please note that in order to make use of the revised tool, your templates must be updated with the new tool, as well.

With ATM changes, please note that your settings files are unaffected by the update. If new settings have been introduced, your old settings files will be updated to the new format when loaded and reasonable defaults will be set for any new settings. Thus, your old settings files should work as expected in the new version.

Keeping the revision numbers as part of the file name was a carefully considered choice. Having the version always visible makes it easy to see which version you have loaded and which updates you have available. This keeps the version you’re running explicit.

There is another method of managing the revisions that adds complexity in one way, but simplifies in another. Using the example above, you could rename XYZ 1.03 simply XYZ (without the version number). When updating, you can install XYZ 1.04, delete the old XYZ, then rename XYZ 1.04 as XYZ. This way, your templates won’t need to be updated. You would have to restart the platform to have things reload. There is a risk, however. You would run the risk of having your settings not align with the new version if the settings have changed. If this happens, you would have to re-enter the settings you want and update template(s).
